Research shows that nearly 43,000 Australians seek medical treatment for eye injuries every
year as a direct result of ‘DIY’ home handyman activities. Over half of these people were not wearing any form of protective eyewear. Optometrists Association Australia believes that following a simple three-step process during do-it-yourself home repairs can significantly reduce the risk of sustaining a serious eye injury. |

Recent figures show that 116,000 Australians a year seek medical assistance for eye injuries. Eye injuries cost Australia over $155 million a year, with welding and grinding activities responsible for the most workplace eye injuries. A large number of these injuries are the result of workers without the proper protective eyewear being too close to the activity or assisting others to perform potentially dangerous tasks. All employers have a legal requirement to provide a safe working environment. This is particularly important in industrial and manufacturing activity. Optometrists Association Australia recommends the three-step approach as outlined in the Australian Standards (Australian Standard 1336-1982) to drastically reduce eye injuries in the workplace. |
