Queensland Vision attendance record on target The Division trialled a financial disincentive for late registrations several years ago but dumped it after just one year. It seemed to Council that it was unreasonable to “punish” members with a higher congress registration fee just because they didn’t register by a particular date. At the end of the day, we want to make it easy for optometrists to attend rather than difficult. Instead we have gradually increased the number of prizes available to early registrants to include three, three-day accommodation packages, golf and dining at Radisson Resort Gold Coast. Queensland Vision 2008 will be held at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre from 28-30 March (always the week after Easter!). You can register online at www.optomsqld.com or by telephoning Ruth, Marika or Greg at 07 3839 4411

Plano update It’s been months since we heard anything from Queensland Health about its plans for plano lenses. You might recall that Minister Robertson was extremely keen to change laws to give some protection to youngsters some of whom have already suffered blindness or vision impairment as a result of misadventure. I called Queensland Health on 4 January and am pleased to report that the Minister will shortly receive (hopefully by 31 January) a discussion paper after which he will select up to three options that will form the basis for a consultation document to be distributed to stakeholders for comment. The OAA is one of those stakeholders. Perhaps this is the year for some action? |

Visiting Optometrists Scheme (VOS) meeting at Optometry House The new arrangements for the VOS target remote and very remote areas of Queensland, and provide increased rates of incentives and an away from practice allowance. A funding round will be advertised between March and June this year for all interested optometrists to provide services under the VOS. We will be advised of the round’s release date when it becomes available. The department will also develop a reference group to appraise the applications received through the tender process and a representative of the OAA will be invited to join. Cassandra Koutouridis will represent the QVI There is a link to the department’s Accessibility Remoteness Index of Australia (ARIA) search engine for reference http://www9.health.gov.au/aria/ariainpt.cfm |

Queensland Vision Initiative Inc QVI Inc is continuing to work on the Referral Pathway Pilot project (funded by the Department of Health and Ageing) and the Indigenous Queenslander Eye Health project, which is funded by Queensland Health. The referral pathway pilot project is looking at ways in which the coordination, quality and delivery of eye health care services in metropolitan Brisbane could be improved. The next stage of the project involves the production of a vision information resource for health practitioners, and survey of current referral practices. With regards to the Indigenous Queenslander Eye Health project, QVI Inc is in the process of preparing a strategy and information plan for the prevention and provision for treatment in eye care of indigenous Queenslanders in line with the National Framework. QVI Inc has been meeting with Indigenous organisations regarding linking eye health services with Indigenous Queenslanders. QVI Inc has also prepared a position paper regarding Indigenous Eye Health in Queensland. The next step of the project will be looking at levels of eye health service provision for Indigenous Queenslanders. QVI Inc has also been meeting with organisations to discuss issues such as aged care, low vision care, and eye health services. |
